Dangriga, located in the Stann Creek district, is the largest town in southern Belize. It maintains the strong cultural influence of the Garinagu (Garifuna) people, the descendents of Carib Indians and Black Africans, who arrived in the area from St Vincent in 1802. Even the name which means “Sweet Water” is a Garifuna word. In town, you will find a vibrant music, culture and art scene. This is where Punta Rock originated and several famous Belizean artists such as Pen Cayatano have made their home. On the 19th November of each year, the town springs alive with celebrations surrounding Garifuna Settlement Day, which celebrates the arrival of the Garinagu people to Belize.
Dangriga provides easy access to the Southern Cayes, in particular South Water Caye, Tobacco Caye and Glovers Reef Atoll, all a short boat ride from the piers dotting the coast of the town. The diving and snorkelling in this region are spectacular. Inland, the Bocawina National Park offers intense adventures such as ziplining, waterfall rappelling and hiking to Antelope Falls. The Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve is also within easy driving distance.
Hopkins is a small village about a 40 minute drive from town. Located on the Caribbean Sea, it was traditionally a fishing village but its cultural charm arising mainly from its Garifuna culture and scenic beaches, have contributed to a recent growth in tourism. There are now many resorts that combine the best of the Maya Mountains, the beach and the reef with a mix of the distinct and unique culture of the area.
Tropic Air flies to Dangriga several times a day from the Belize City International and Municipal airports as well as Placencia and Punta Gorda. Dangriga airport is located in the north part of town.
